Friday 16 November
Arriving as the sun was going down, the Agua Azul pay booth was deserted. More luck was to be had as we asked around for a place to camp. The locals said we could park anywhere on the grass for nothing which was pretty good. After the usual landy dinner a guy came over asking us to help him get his pick up truck out of the mud he'd conveniently parked it in. The landy had no trouble pulling him out and the Mexican was so pleased that he gave us four beers.

After a rainy night we had a look at what was making the roaring noise all night. The Agua Azul waterfalls are pretty impressive and the water is clear blue, perfect for cleaning dirty travellers. As we left for Palenque we came across another hapless soul in need of landy assistance. A taxi driver had punctured as he rounded the corner, span into the ditch and couldn't get out. The landy soon had things under control. Unfortunately it was broad daylight so the taxi driver wasn't carrying any beers and we refused his offers of monetary payment, settling for free lifetime taxi rides to Agua Azul.

Palanque is just down the road from the waterfalls and is one of the top three Maya sites in Mexico and its easy to see why. The ruins are in good condition and the temple structures atop the pyramids are largely intact with carvings inside. Jungle surrounds the area with monkeys in the trees giving it a different atmosphere to the sites we've visited so far. As its Saturday we decided to head for Villahermosa to find some nightlife.
