Camping near Sola de Vega

Making tortillas

Tuesday 17 - Sunday 21 October

The road wound through the mountains and as darkness closed we found a spot to camp beside a track near the small village of Sola de Vega. Later that night we were awoken by voices and torchlight on the tent. Surrounding the landy were about 15 guys with machetes! They were the local 'patrol' investigating a suspicious vehicle (the landy) and, once our peaceful intentions were explained, wished us buenos noches. In the morning we had a breakfast invitation at the next house where the senora made us fresh tortillas with beans and asked Magaly loads of questions about life in Europe including "aren't you scared of sleeping with Tom (without being married)?" which was a bit off!

Big piles of rocks waiting around the corner

Time for the yearly wash

On the way through the mountains to Puerto Escondido we found a waterfall beside the road with was perfect for showering under. Escondido was great, peaceful and with great beaches and surf - B and T will visit it again next week for some much needed post DF relaxation.

The road to Acapulco skirted the coast, and as the sun set, things got more interesting, first a huge spider tried to cross in front of the landy and got squashed, then we came across a horse limping along the road with one of its legs broken and bloody. Stopping at the next village we informed a group of horsey type blokes who hopefully put the poor thing out of its misery.

Acapulco wasn't as bad as I expected yet was worse than Magaly expected! Tourism seems to be waning in Mexcio as the beach was almost deserted except for these fisherman. We left the same evening and drove all the way back to DF on the expensive but fast toll motorway in time for Magalys flight back home.
