Cancun beach

Tulum, with...

...its own beach too

Friday 23 - Monday 26 November

Cancun is just as we expected, expensive and full of American tourists. We found a campsite beside the Hilton Hotel on the beach. A guy on the beach offered us 15 minutes on one of his jetbikes for 200 pesos which is almost the same as a tank of diesel so we didn't go for it. We also had the chance to go to Cuba for free if we took someones bags full of soap, clothes and stuff. T had bad feelings about it and where to leave the landy so we didn't go. We hit the local number one disco, Coco Bongo which has a sign outside with reviews from various american TV stations and magazines saying 'the best disco in latin america'. Suffice it to say, it wasn't.

Dodgy bridge on a...

...jungle track, leading to...

...big puddles

Further down the coast we stopped at Tulum where there is another Mayan ruin beside the beach. We camped on the beach and went to the only bar in town for some Saturday night entertainment which involved meeting other travellers from Manchester, Norway and France and downing a few beers. The next morning we had a quick look at the map which showed Punta Allen, a spit of land in a conservation area and decided to drive down it. After 30 badly potholed kilometers a quick check of the map showed the spit of land to be alost 60km long. Not to be outdone, we carried on to the unexciting end before driving straight back again, meeting a big peccary (wild pig thing) on the way.

Taking off the Mexican import sticker

Welcome to Belize

Empty roads, except for a few landies

Sunday night we stayed near the shore at Chetumal, on the border with Belize. Monday saw us smoothly deregistering our landy from Mexico and entering Belize. The Belize entry was hassle free except the customs official insisted that the landy chassis number indicates it was built in 1987 instead of 1990, which is completely wrong but he went ahead and wrote 1987 Landrover in T's passport anyway. More details from Belize coming up!
