Mon!

Friday 07 - Sunday 09 December

After a fairly quiet Thursday night out in Belize City we decided to leave Fridge, after going to the landy graveyard to get his gearbox filler plug he'd forgotten, and head to San Ignacio a few miles from the Guatemalan border and rumoured to have good nightlife. Needless to say, the nightlife was non-existent but the location, Cahal Pech would be worth a second try for Saturday night.

high tech crimefighting

Saturday found us driving to Belmopan to say hello to Daniel Lopez, a used car parts dealer and landy enthusiast. The capital city, population 7000, was totally deserted, most of the government workers choosing not to live here during the weekends even though it seems to be a lot more relaxed than Belize City.

We returned to San Ignacio and Cahal Pech disco which was uneventful. There was a live band playing the fast Belizean punta music but dancing to the fast beat seems to involve little movement of the feet, just a swaying of the body. Leaving the disco, we found a handy camping spot nearby and awoke the next morning to a couple of guys telling us that we were camped in the grounds of Cahal Pech Mayan ruins and that we had to pay 5 dollars each entrance fee. Seeing as we had to pay, a quick look around the small ruins was on the cards. The name means 'place of ticks'.

1000ft waterfall

Douglas de Silva

Driving south into the Maya Mountains forest reserve we stopped to have a look at the originally named 1000 foot waterfall before heading to the abandoned logging town of Douglas de Silva where there is just a park attendant, about 30 empty wooden houses, a yard with landies and trucks in it and a camp site. The attendent told us that everyone is on holiday for two weeks and normally there are a few people living and working here.
