Mountains on the way to...

...Guatemala City

Thursday 20 - Friday 21 December

The road to Guatemala City twists and turns over mountain passes making the landy start to overheat on the long climbs because, despite a thorough jet wash in Flores, the radiator still had mud stuck in it from the jungle. Putting the heater on full blast alleviated the problem and cooked us nicely.

The road is packed with lorries doing the maddest overtaking manoeuvres we've seen so far, hammering around blind bends and forcing oncoming cars onto the verge seemed to be quite the norm. One of the daily newspapers has at least 4 pages of horrendous crashes every day plus the ubiquitous assasinations and burning down of houses, with whole families locked inside. Fortunately we've missed all the excitement so far.

With a couple of the guys from Swissboring

Aye...

We landed in the hustle and bustle of the capital, found a car park right in the centre and went for a stroll, ate some dodgy chinese food and rang up the guys from Swissboring. We met up in their office just in time for a party followed by more drinking in a nearby bar and a disco. These guys have all been following our travels and were keen to meet us, hear more of our travels and check out the landy. They generously let us camp in their office car park (more luxurious than it sounds) and use their computers to check our mails the next day before we headed off to Antigua and a reunion with Fridge and Stuart and Chris.
