Getting ready...

...for some serious ascents

Which way is it?

Sunday 22 - Monday 23 June

There is lots to do in Huaraz if you are into outdoorsy type stuff. We've been carrying full climbing kit in the back of the landy since the start of the trip, never used, so staying with the mountain rescue team left no excuse for lazing about. We set off for the afternoon to a small rock face with six bolted routes of varying difficulty. It was the first time for some but T had been before so he climbed first to take the rope up. Despite being totally out of condition after 2 years sitting in the landy, he made it no worries, although his legs were amusingly shaking like jelly!

Beginners luck

The rock is in a chilled spot with a small river bubbling down the valley. After everyone had been up two or three times with varying success the afternoon had whiled away and we headed to the nearby thermal baths, but after a meal of river fish we decided to give the baths a miss as the light was fading and it was getting cold.

Inflating

Wild water

Getting soaked

The mountain rescue team are fully kitted out after a special $1 million grant for equipment shared between three teams was released by the government 4 years ago. Its all top stuff including clothing, climbing and camping kit, radios, even a satellite phone. Usefully they have rafts too so we took one out down the river, putting the digi in a clear plastic dry bag for some action shots. With 'Policia' written on the back of our lifejackets we were ready to face anything.

Serious stuff

Rafts are heavy

It was more exciting on top of the landy

Unfortunately, the 'rapids' are only class I and II, very tame as the water level is pretty low at this time of year too. Even so it was a good laugh for an hour or more with a jovial crowd making the most of it. Nobody fell in but everyone seemed to be very wet at the end! Afterwards we carried the raft back on the roof of the landy, the extra weight making the springs creak and some swerving about giving the rooftop passengers sat in the raft a scary ride.
