Mon 06 - Tue 07 August

The road out of Texas to Roswell was a monotonous series of straight lines punctuated by a slight rise every ten miles so that when we came over it there was an identical stretch of straightness ahead. We met a guy in a gas station who was the local Chevy dealer. He'd been to South America and told us, 'when those latin honeys see your white skin, they'll cling to you like a baby monkey clings to its mama'. Aye!

Roswell was predictably crap, just a normal town with some dubious past history. A quick visit to the UFO museum didn't help to reduce our scepticism. We stayed in an RV park and spent valuable time rearranging the contents of the landy, something that was long overdue. In the morning we commenced our personally tailored SAS type physical training regime by going for a one mile jog and collapsing in the pool afterwards. We found a free phone connection in the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and managed to update the site. Santa Fe was the next stop, more miles of straight roads.

Santa Fe, to quote a horny young resident, is 'great if you like art and living with a bunch of old folks'. After eating out and going well over budget we spent the night in the hills surrounded by expensive houses. The landy had been smoking a lot and was down on power so we spent some time checking it over and found nothing. Driving back into Santa Fe to get diesel, we spotted a sign saying that we were at 7000 feet...doh! We headed out to Los Alamos were we drove right into a big thunderstorm with lightning all around. Despite this we failed miserably to get any lightning pics.

Landying in an Indian reservation.

First camp in the rain

We met an ex landy owner in the national park near Los Alamos who recommended visiting an old Indian village. Heading off that way on dirt roads, we found our path blocked. The road was closed and we didn't manage to find an alternative route despite landying around the desert like nutters. Running low on diesel and dusk descending, we were forced to overnight in the Indian reservation which turned out well, we found a scenic spot hidden from passing Apaches and set camp in the middle of the thunderstorm. Next day dawned bright and clear and our breakfast was interrupted by two low flying black stealth fighters passing less than 100 feet away - obviously they were checking out the landy.
