Sights of Culiacan

Tuesday 18 - Monday 24 September

Despite the rather dramatic start to our stay in Culican, things mellowed out a bit. The landy got a rubber suspension bush in place of the polybush which disappeared and the lads enjoyed relaxing in town, taking in some of the sights. A drunken meeting in a disco on Wednesday night allowed us to exchange our city centre car park camping arrangements for an air conditioned room in Manuel's house. The following night we also met up with Elial who'd spotted the landy in the street and sent us an email. He turned out to be a friend of Manuel so we all went out to a disco and drank loads of beer. More drama ensued as T had a bit of a misunderstanding with a doris and started a riot. We left in a hurry with various cousins and whatnot having a running battle outside the front door!

Escaping Culican, we drove down the coast to Mazatlan which turned out to be another party place. As with Culiacan, the humidity was unbelieveable but at least we could cool off in the sea. Disaster struck again as we left Friday nights disco, heading off to what we thought was quiet spot below the lighthouse, we put the tent up and were preparing to get some sleep when a car drove along the deserted headland almost up to the landy. Three drunk guys came over and started accusing us of having drugs, one claimed to work for the government and started looking into the landy. He demanded to see our visas and threatened to call the police. This was fine by us as we were feeling like things weren't too friendly. By sheer luck, two trucks carrying police armed to the teeth arrived and gave these guys a thorough search and questioning. The police left, saying all is ok now, leaving the three guys in their car about to drive off. B was a bit pissed off so he gave them the one fingered salute. The three immediately came running over, one punching B in the eye amidst a torrent of verbal abuse in Mexican slang before things calmed down a little. While this fracas was going on, one of them took the opportunity to reach inside the landy and steal the digital camera and Ts wallet which we didn't know about until after they had driven off in a hurry.

The guys were pretty thick because the police had already taken their details and arrested them later the same day so we managed to get the camera back the following Monday. A line up on the Saturday identified the guy who did the punching and the chief of police assured us he was going to jail. Monday saw us finalising our statements in the same room as the felons so we fired off a quick pic of the bastards.

We stayed in a hotel on the weekend for the first time on the trip so that the police could get in touch with us when necessary, so we used the time to investigate the local area - the night life was good and the girls were the most beautiful seen so far (but reserved, as usual) despite their tendency to frolic in the surf fully clothed.
