Monday 24 - Thursday 28 September

Leaving Mazatlan pissed off but relieved to get our camera back, we stopped in darkness to camp near Acaponeta in the most mosquito infested place in Mexico. Donning DEET, trousers, socks and wearing arab like headresses we sweated like pigs but managed to only get 20 or so bites each.

Moving on towards Puerto Vallarta we found a great deserted campsite above the beach. There were some big rocks under waves so a quick swim in the incredibly warm water was all we could manage. A chance meeting in a Puerto Vallarta pool hall with an English guy and girl who were working for the summer on a turtle conservation project led us to Sayulita for surfing and nearby San Pancho for turtle watching. The waves at Sayulita were the biggest they'd had this year due to a tropical storm which was ravaging southern Baja at the time. We managed to progress to being able to stand on the board for more than an instant too! The evenings entertainment was a bit special. We camped beside the beach at San Pancho and arranged to be woken up if any turtles were spotted. At around midnight we discovered a turtle in the process of burying her eggs only about 50m from the landy. Click the picture to see the full story.
